INTRODUCTION
(for new subscribers)

The purpose of this newsletter is to provide a regular and consistent supplement to the action-oriented process in my website - www.behappy101.com - and in my first book, simply called BeHappy!

It is intended to make a powerful contribution to the amount of joy and fulfillment in your daily life by providing regular tools, reminders, and strategies to: This is far beyond a “How To” concept. It is rather a “Do” system, which, when used in conjunction with the BeHappy! book, helps create your own personal “Happiness Plan” for your life. If you want a template or “blueprint” for this Happiness Plan, Click here and you can get it free.

Since my goal is to help make people happier, however, it is best to get the book to use along with the website to achieve maximum benefit from the plan (yes, that’s partly a sales pitch — but it’s true).

Last week, for example, a very close friend, Diane Cantor, died suddenly and unexpectedly (please read my “toast” to Diane – and consider the issue of “death and happiness” by clicking here). Diane was just 58 years old and one of the most special, beautiful people you could ever meet. Neil Cantor, Diane’s husband (and soulmate), is certainly dealing with the immense “stress” and grief right now.

In fact, psychologists have devised a list of life’s most stressful events – and the death of a spouse tops the list as the #1 most stressful event possible in life (see the whole list – and calculate you’re your own “stress score” – by clicking here).

So how do we deal with this kind of adversity?

The answer, in my opinion, lies in 3 concepts (3 “tudes”):
  1. Gratitude
  2. Attitude
  3. Fortitude
GRATITUDE means appreciating what you have in life – rather than focusing on what is missing or what you’ve lost. This is not always easy. In fact, sometime, it’s extremely difficult. Neil, for example, is dealing with the death of his wife and soulmate. How can he feel grateful? Well, I happen to know he does feel grateful. He is very grateful for the 35 wonderful years he had with Diane. That’s what he focuses on. He views this as a gift he was given. And, although her death is extremely painful, I know he gets comfort – and perhaps even feels “happy” – due to the fact that they had 35 happy, amazing, connected years together. This is certainly better than many couples who spend 50 or 60 years together, but are miserable (NOTE: As an aside, if you are not happy in your relationship, please do something about it by clicking here).

A positive, optimistic ATTITUDE is essential for a happy life. This can be complicated, partly because when times are tough (which is when having a positive attitude is most important) – that’s when it’s most difficult to have a positive, happy attitude. It’s really an “unfair” situation. But really, the “adversity” we all deal with in life makes it important that we create and maintain a positive, optimistic attitude if we want to really be happy. We will get into how to do this in a minute (see below in the “Actions” section).

FORTITUDE – which can also be called “stamina”, “staying power”, “courage”, “strength”, or “determination” – is the 3rd key to dealing with significant adversity in life. Since adversity and stress are facts of life for just about everyone, the ability to “tough it out” can help get through it all with a more positive outcome (and even possibly enjoy the process a bit). I think of Nelson Mandela when I say this. Here is a guy who was inappropriately imprisoned for 27 years (which most would agree is significant adversity). Yet, he “persevered” (had the stamina to stick it out) – and then later, after his release, became President of his country. That’s fortitude!!

There is one other aspect of this “dealing with adversity” concept which I must address (even though it’s a bit risky). That is, religion. I know many people who have made it through very tough times because of their religious faith and focus. It’s like the quote (I don’t know who said it) … “Religion is the prescription for an ailing soul”.

There are many reasons for this, which I won’t get into here. But, if you are dealing with significant adversity in your life, and you are open to this as a possible source of “comfort”, it couldn’t hurt. And as I said, many people have found it very helpful when going through stressful, difficult times.

Now, please read on and take the "Actions" described below to help you improve the "3 tudes" for yourself.

BeHappy! ACTIONS TO TAKE UNTIL THE NEXT ISSUE OF THIS NEWSLETTER

“Pain is inevitable. Suffering is optional”
- M. Kathleen Casey
Like everything in life, the old saying, “practice makes perfect” applies to happiness, too. By using the tools and concepts in BeHappy! - and applying the principles on my website (www.behappy101.com) and in this bi-monthly newsletter - you'll get the coaching and the “practice” you need to lead the happiest possible life. It takes daily action to get “perfect” at it, though.

So, if you have read previous BeHappy! Newsletters you know that every issue provides some simple action-oriented exercises for the next two months (until the next edition of the newsletter) which relate to the main "subject" of this edition of the newsletter to help make happiness a habit.

Just a few minutes of focus every day and you’ll be laying the foundation for the happiest possible life - both for yourself and for those you love.

If you do these things, I can promise you’ll notice a big difference in the quality of your life.

You will BeHappy!

Actions for the next 60 days:

Take these actions over the next sixty days and by the time you receive the next edition of the BeHappy! Newsletter (around the beginning of September), I am confident you'll be making progress toward a happier life:

The action plan for the next 60 days basically involves improving your “3 tudes” as described above. And, it’s really simple (but not necessarily easy). What it involves is basically creating an attitude of GRATITUDE. I have discussed this before in previous newsletters and on the BeHappy101.com website (because it really works), and that’s the 3 Great Things Exercise. Please click on the link there (in the sentence you just read) to learn how to do this exercise. Then (and here’s the main action part) – actually do it every day for the next 60 days. This action – if done faithfully for the next 60 days – will absolutely change your life. You will start waking up in the morning with a smile on your face and a more positive outlook on life … in other words, it will start to change your ATTITUDE (the 2nd of the “3 tudes”). Then, once you are in the habit of doing the “3 Great Things” exercise, and you become more grateful for all the really good things in your life right now (and there are always things for which to be grateful), your attitude will begin to shift to one of consistent optimism and hopefulness. This will then build FORTITUDE. Yes, you will get through whatever adversity you are dealing with right now, which will build confidence and greater self-esteem. Just as important, it will show you that it wasn’t that difficult to get through it. Sure, it may have been very painful (like my friend, Neil, and the pain associated with the death of his wife). But even with that kind of trauma, you will find that you are stronger than you thought – and life goes on. You will have achieved gratitude for what you have in your life, a positive attitude, and the fortitude to get through just about any adversity imaginable.

If you want to take this a step further, there are several options for you. First, you can sign up for one-on-one personal E-Coaching by clicking here and I’ll help you personally with all this. Or, you can get some more general guidance by getting a copy of BeHappy! by clicking here if you don’t already have one.

By following this action plan for the next 60 days (throughout July and August) you should begin to really feel a lot more grateful, have a better overall attitude, and start to develop much more stamina and "fortitude". We’ll look back on this 60-day action plan in the next edition of the BeHappy! Newsletter at the beginning of September. Then, we’ll take more actions to get to the next level of happiness for your life.
