Health & Fitness: Weight Loss (Including During the Holidays)

There is a website, called 43Things.com, which lists the “world’s most popular goals” (it lists the top 100 goals, so I’m not sure why they call the website “43Things”).

Believe it or not, the #1 most popular goal “for the world” is to LOSE WEIGHT. Can you believe it?

On the one hand, it’s not hard to believe – since there is such a huge percentage of the world population which is overweight. On the other hand, though, it is a bit hard to believe since there is such a huge percentage of the world population which is overweight – meaning that most people are not achieving that goal.

There are many fundamental reasons for this global “obesity” problem – which we can’t get into with this brief message. In summary, though, some of the reasons are:

  1. The kinds of food we eat (more refined carbohydrates, sweets/sugars, and “fast foods”)
  2. The amount of food we eat (“All-You-Can-Eat” restaurants and huge portions)
  3. The relative lack of exercise among the general population (we eat more than we burn)
  4. Marketing (studies show the more commercials children watch, the fatter they are)
  5. Social influences (the more our peers are overweight, the more we tend to be overweight)
  6. Too many people are "not happy" (yes, unhappiness is an indirect cause of obesity since it can cause over-eating)

And there are others.

What we’re going to talk about briefly today relates indirectly to most of these areas – since they are generally exaggerated during the holiday season.

Because, typically at this time of year, we eat a lot of “fattening foods” (like pies, cakes, and other sweets), have less time to exercise (which also increases stress – causing many people to eat even more), go to more parties than usual and get bombarded with advertisements for food and drink. It’s part of what makes the season fun, too.

So, what to do?

Well, first, as mentioned in last week’s post, we should all have a “Holiday Happiness Plan”. This includes scheduling time for exercise and creating an eating and party plan.

It is also advisable to go into the holiday season a bit “lighter”. So, with a few weeks to go before we get into the “heavy” part of the holiday season, it’s time to get started on a “slimming down plan” for the next few weeks.

Bump up your exercise routine for the next few weeks. Eat the amount and types of foods that allow you to lose some fat (not necessarily low-fat foods). Keep stress levels as low as possible.

The point is, with the assumption that there will be a bit more eating, a bit more socializing, and a bit less exercising during the month of December, start now to “get in shape” for the holidays so the impact afterwards is not so great. Too many people either spend the next year trying to get rid of the extra pounds – or even worse, never get rid of what’s gained during the holidays.
