Self-Confidence ... and Happiness

Bookmark and Share

Do you shy away from people as much as you can?   Do you get nervous or anxious when joining a big gathering or meeting?  Do you fear being appointed to make a speech?  Are you generally afraid that you’re going to make a mistake?

If so, then you probably have a relatively low level of self-esteem and less self-confidence than you need for true happiness.

There are so many people who never realize their dreams, even though they are fully capable of attaining their ambitions in life.

They have the talents and abilities, but their doubts and fears (usually related to low self-confidence) are preventing them from moving forward.

They are NOT confident enough to get out there and just do it!

Most people just don’t know that we all have the capacity to achieve anything we put our minds to.  But without confidence, we cannot use that skill and capacity to implement what we have in our mind.

In addition, people need other people.  The cooperation of others is vital to the success of any individual. Without confidence, however, people can’t interact properly; and worse, begin losing great opportunities, such as not getting that job promotion due to lack of social skills or not participating in a competition for fear of embarrassment or failure.

Lacking self-confidence can ruin relationships and can block your path to success in life!

It’s unfortunate that many people decide to keep “hiding” within the shadows of their doubtful selves when they know they have the capacity and ability to make things happen, achieve their goals, and realize their dreams.

They let fear and shyness overcome their chances of success; which is why they don’t risk uncertainties.

What they don't know is that they are actually taking a bigger risk by not doing what they need and want to do - the risk of staying in a rut forever and never experiencing the wonderful feeling brought about by their accomplishments.

Self-confidence is an all important trait you need to acquire in today's fast-paced world. For one thing, you must have confidence in yourself, first to earn the confidence and respect of others.

Shyness and fear will get you nowhere. These traits will only lead you deeper and deeper into loneliness and unhappiness.

In addition to all the poor “results” people get who suffer from low self-confidence, the truth is, it just feels bad.

The happiest people in the world are those who are confident and can accept themselves as they are – while simultaneously striving to be better, and achieving their dreams, goals, and desires.

So, how can this be done?

The answer is somewhat varied and is not always easy.  Fundamentally it requires 5 essential steps:

  1. Change your thinking:  Basically, thoughts lead to beliefs which lead to actions which lead to results.  So, if you change your thoughts, you will change your results, which will change your life … and help build your self-confidence.  You need to change negative thoughts into positive thoughts.  This can be done by daily journaling.
  2. Realize how self-confidence (or lack of it) is taught and created:  Our confidence in ourselves starts being built or destroyed in our early years – by our parents, family members, teachers, and friends.  Understand what influences these people played on your confidence and you can start to make changes.
  3. Strive for perfection, but settle for excellence:  Perfectionism and expectations of never failing hinder confidence.  While we should all strive for perfection, we cannot demand it.  We are human and we must be able to accept failure and settle for less than perfection in most cases.  Especially, don’t try to live up to the expectations and demands of others – especially if they are perfectionists.
  4. Focus on your strengths and not your weaknesses:  We all have strengths and weaknesses.  If we focus on our weaknesses, we will not like ourselves much (a very common occurrence) and will certainly not be very self-confident.
  5. Give and receive love:  Strong relationships boost self-confidence.  Importantly, though, self-confidence is increased by strong, loving, fulfilling relationship.  So, it’s important to nurture the relationships you already have to help build your self-confidence.  Then, your relationships will get even stronger.

There is obviously much more to the process.  It’s important, therefore, to know yourself and learn how to best build your self-confidence.
