Contribute!  To Be Happy!

Contribution - at any level - is critical to achieving total happiness.

Whether it's time, money, love, friendship, or thoughtfulness, our ability to be happy requires us to contribute to others. It is a fundamental source of fulfillment and joy for all of us.

In the "Happiness Formula" I created to help assess, quantify, and improve our level of happiness, contribution is an essential component of the equation. That formula is:

H = (G + DH + C + 3R) ÷ 6

If you aren't familiar with this formula yet, click here to get my free 5-Part "Happiness Formula" video course.  It will take you step-by-step through the formula and you'll see very quickly how "simple" it is to live a truly happy life using this formula.

There are many ways to contribute.

For example, one of the ways my wife has contributed to others in need is by taking our golden retriever to a children's hospital ward for very sick children. These sick (and many times dying) kids "light up" playing with him. They laugh - even when they feel terrible.

They really seem to forget they are sick for a few minutes. And, part of the point is that it makes my wife feel great, too, just by making such a "small" contribution to these awesome little kids.

It even goes much deeper than that, though.

Psychologically, this deep feeling of contribution brings a positive force to our inner self that changes our lives.   Our fundamental "identity" as a human being is strengthened by this force and our entire life is affected for the better.  In addition, contributing...

  • Helps satisfy any personal values we have, especially if it's part of your Definition of Happiness.
  • Increases self-esteem
  • Challenges us
  • Helps us meet new people

Some Ideas on How to Contribute to Others...

  • Smile and be friendly. Yes, sometimes just a smile will brighten someone’s day.
  • Volunteer at a charity or hospital.
  • Donate something you don’t use
  • Make a financial donation.
  • Redirect gifts. Instead of having people give you birthday or Christmas gifts, ask them to donate gifts or money to a certain charity.
  • Stop to help someone in need.
  • Take leftovers to someone who's hungry.  Maybe there's an elderly neighbor who can't easily make their dinner - help them out once in a while.
  • Teach. Take the time to teach someone a skill you know.
  • Comfort someone in grief.  Often they just need a hug or someone to talk to.
  • Buy food for a homeless person
  • Just listen. People sometimes just need someone who will listen to them.
  • Help build someone a home.  Religious ministries often do this.
  • Send a nice email or note. Just tell someone you’re thinking of them and appreciate them.
  • Donate food
  • Tutor a child.  Call a school and volunteer your services.
  • Offer to babysit.  Many parents need a break and can't afford to go out together because of the cost of a babysitter.  Give them a break.

So, find your way to contribute to others.  Then, take action on it and...

BeHappy! my friends
